Itβs a private airstrip, but itβs still risky, so he folds Henry in a hug and whispers fiercely, βI completely fucking love you.β

We shall not lie on our backs at the Red Castle and watch the vultures wheeling over the valley where they killed the grandson of Genghiz. We will not read Babur's memoirs in his garden at Istalif and see the blind man smelling his way around the rose bushes. Or sit in the Peace of Islam with the beggars of Gazar Gagh. We will not stand on the Buddha's head at Bamiyan, upright in his niche like a whale in a dry-dock. We will not sleep in the nomad tent, or scale the Minaret of Jam. And we shall lose the tastes - the hot, coarse, bitter bread; the green tea flavoured with cardamoms; the grapes we cooled in the snow-melt; and the nuts and dried mulberries we munched for altitude sickness. Nor shall we get back the smell of the beanfields, the sweet, resinous smell of deodar wood burning, or the whiff of a snow leopard at 14,000 feet.

There appears to be a form of chronic mountain sickness that comes from years of repeated frequent mal-acclimitization to very high altitudes by the sea level adapted human living at sea level. It eventually shows up as sleep apnea, bruxism, erratic low blood oxygenation, fatigue, forgetfulness, confusion, gastrointestinal issues, nutritional deficiencies, hormone problems, radiation sickness and failure to acclimatize to any altitude. Left untreated it progresses onto include nerve pains throughout the body, food intolerance, heart arrhythmia's, headaches, irritability, depression, disease and premature death. My health issues are now fully understood, treated and I am back to normal. It was a mix of amino acid deficiencies and low testosterone causing serious food intolerance and altitude hypersensitivity to occur. Low magnesium was causing sleep apnea and I now take magnesium supplements. I had also lost my circadian rhythm and it restored while I was homeless and camping outdoors for five months in the Hawaiian jungle. Based on my testing, I will have to take amino acids, magnesium and testosterone for the rest of my life. The sickness comes back if I stop the supplements.

Just as we received the radio message, a group of Sherpas came running down the valley toward us. They were dragging something, which turned out to be Makalu Gau, whose feet had been destroyed by the cold. He could not stand. Now we had a problem. We talked about it, and I told the others that I couldnβt get on the helicopter and leave Makalu. I think that was the right thing to do, but that wasnβt why I said it. I didnβt want to second-guess myself every day for the rest of my life. Then we saw the Squirrel. The shiny green machine rose directly above us, and moved up the valley, ascended toward us and then just disappeared off the face. I thought to myself, This guy is not stupid. This was a supremely dumb idea. If he puts the machine down for any reason and cannot take off, he is a dead man. Heβs got to know that. He was up there in civilian clothes. He was not a climber. He did not have the clothing. He did not have the experience. He did not have the skills. Heβd be trapped above the Khumbu Icefall, two thousand of the most vicious feet of real estate on earth. I started to see a serious decline in health in high altitude professional astronomy. Most noticeable was the onset of constant fatigue, memory issues and confusion. The condition progressed during my time in the commercial and utility solar industry where I started falling asleep at work and developed hot skin. The doctors tested me and said I had shift work disorder in 2008 and vitamin D and Vitamin B12 deficiencies in 2011. In 2015 I had a COVID-19 like sickness that made everyone in the family really sick. I never recovered and this started regular visits to the doctors. They diagnosed severe sleep apnea and mental illness and prescribed a CPAP machine. Under the care of the doctors I became much sicker on their prescription drugs and treatments. I eventually got smart and figured out I was not going to recover under their care and they may actually kill me! In 2021, moving to Hawaii island revealed that I had βAltitude Hypersensitivityβ and a high altitude commuting disease called βMageeβs Diseaseβ. By the end of 2023 I had developed the treatments for these conditions and made a reasonable recovery. There is no cure for either condition. They are life-long illnesses. I now have to live well below 1,000 feet near sea level and take the treatments for the rest of my life. I documented the conditions in the books βToxic Altitudeβ and βMageeβs Diseaseβ. The treatments for the hypoxic high altitude damage appeared transferable into COVID-19 and Long COVID and these are documented in the books βCOVID Supplementsβ and βLong COVID Supplementsβ.

BREATHING EXERCISE WHILE WALKING AT HIGH ALTITUDE 1βConsciously breathe more than you feel you need to. 2βFocus on your breath. Feel yourself breathing as you move. 3βSynchronize your breath and your pace so you can get into a cadence. Find your own rhythm without forcing it. RESTING BREATHING EXERCISE TO ADJUST TO AN ALTITUDE GREATER THAN THIRTEEN THOUSAND FEET This exercise can help you to forestall the potentially dangerous symptoms caused by a low oxygen level in your body that you may encounter if climbing or visiting somewhere where the altitude exceeds thirteen thousand feet. Please do not rely on this exercise to prevent altitude sickness symptoms without the proper supervision or experience. The best way to safely learn it is to participate in one of our expeditions. See βFurther Readingβ for more information. It is helpful to use a saturation meter to measure your blood oxygen level when doing this. 1βWake up four to four-and-a-half hours after you went to sleep. 2βDo the Basic Breathing Exercise until your saturation meter reads a minimum of 95 to 100 percent saturation. 3βPractice the breathing exercises for at least a half hour. 4βGo back to sleep.

The story of that first ascent to Leh from Manali is in this verse that I wrote after that terrible drive. To a land called Ladakh we were preparing to go, Over high roads generously peppered with snow. The old monk saw us packing the car and a greeting he waved, Which I returned since I am moderately well-behaved. βSo youβre off to my land of Ladakh I guess, It will take you two days to reach at best.β βNo sir, I have a very capable car, you see, And within a day in the city of Leh weβll be.β βYes son, the car will handle the road, that is true, What Iβm wondering is whether or not will you. Those roads are high and almost touch the sky It would be prudent to be a little shy.β And, worrying his beads, he walked away with a limping gait, And I scoffed at his warningβI was in good physical shape. It was a terrible mistake I made, And the price in full I paid. We climbed that towering road too high and too quick, And at the fifteen thousand-foot high Baralacha La fell violently sick. Altitude mountain sickness had enveloped me in a deadly embrace, My head hurt, my stomach retched, and around me the world reeled at a furious pace. Had to make Sarchu, the only sheltered place to stay, And it was misery personified every kilometre of the way. Mountains and streams make Sarchu a place of unimaginable beauty, But appreciating it was beyond me as I lay groaning, nauseous and retchy. It could have been paradise for all I care, Inside my mind it was the devilβs lair. The gentle monk had tried to warn us, Words that Iβd dismissed as an old manβs fuss. Here in the mountains where altitude is king, Hurry or haste is a very deadly thing. A million times I called to my God that night, And then I saw the bright shining light. I snapped awake shivering with fear; are the angels here, is my end near? βNot yet, my son,β a voice seemed to say in my ear. It was the sun shining through the tent, the beginning of another day, My head felt good and I could stand without feeling the world sway. That remains my most distressing night, Those seven hours that I took to fight the height. I am wiser now and whenever that awesome road I drive, I remember the monk and am never in a hurry to arrive. Apart

Kilimanjaro offered a diverse and riveting selection of ways to die: malaria, typhoid fever, yellow fever, hepatitis, meningitis, polio, tetanus, and cholera. Those, of course, could be vaccinated against. There was no injection to protect you from the fog, which could roll in fast and as dense as clouds. According to one hikerβs online testimonial, βAt lunch .Β .Β . the fog was so thick, I did not know what I was eating until it was in my mouth. Even then, it was a guess.β With zero visibility, people wandered off the trail and died of exposure. Even on a clear day, one could step on a loose rock and slide to an exhilarating demise. Or sometimes the mountain just came to you. In June 2006, three American climbers had been killed by a rockslide traveling 125 miles per second. Some of the boulders had been the size of cars, and scientists suspected the ice that held them in place had melted due to global warming. On the other end, hypothermia was also a concern. Temperatures could drop below zero at night. Then there was this heartening tidbit I came across in my research: βAt 20,000 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africaβs highest peak and also the worldβs tallest volcano. And although classified as dormant, Kilimanjaro has begun to stir, and evidence suggests that a massive landslide could rip open the side of the mountain causing a cataclysmic flow of hot gases and rock, similar to Mount St. Helens.β A volcano?! Theyβre still making volcanoes? But the biggest threat on Kilimanjaro was altitude sickness. It happened when you ascended too quickly. Symptoms could be as mild as nausea, shortness of breath, and a headache. At its worst it resulted in pulmonary edema, where your lungs filled up with fluid (essentially, drowning on land), or cerebral edema, where your brain swelled. Eighty percent of Kilimanjaro hikers got altitude sickness. Ten percent of those cases became life threatening or caused brain damage. Ten percent of 80 percent? I didnβt like those odds. Maybe this trip was too dangerous. My

When I worked in high altitude astronomy, the worst sickness that I experienced was not at the 13,796 feet very high altitude summit of Mauna Kea Observatory (MKO) in Hawaii, it was at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) in Arizona at the much lower altitude of 6,875 feet. Due to my very high altitude experiences, I knew that this strange sickness was not primarily caused by altitude sickness and was most likely Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). After reporting various behavioral problems in all of the staff to the management team, my contract was not renewed, I was unable to legally protect the health and safety of the workers that I was responsible for, troubleshooting of this environmental problem stopped and I left in a sickened state for my next position before I could find the root cause.

The new altitude sickness classification scheme has four types: 1. Altitude Hypersensitivity β Above sea level to 4,900 feet. 2. High altitude - 4,900 to 11,500 feet.
3. Very high altitude - 11,500 to 18,000 feet.
4. Extreme altitude - Above 18,000 feet.

It was a mistake to follow my management training in high altitude professional astronomy. I never realized I was disciplining sickened staff that had become forgetful through altitude sickness that included oxygen starvation, adverse environmental exposures, central sleep apnea and mal-acclimatization!

I consider myself fortunate that I spent three years working at 7,775 feet before spending five years working at 13,796 feet on the summit of Mauna Kea. I can only wonder how much more severe my long term very high altitude sickness could have been without the initial adaptation to the lower altitude.

The scandal with the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) atop Mauna Kea is how it managed to obtain a construction permit to build a manned telescope in a known biologically toxic environment to workers. How many more people need to die, get injured or develop long term very high altitude sickness that will last a lifetime?

Very high altitude workers should be aware that if they become disabled by Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS), it is highly unlikely they will get government disability payments.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
This was my Mauna Kea experience: 1. Hire worker and do not disclose the full range of the biological toxicity of the very high altitude facility to them. 2. Let the worker get sick and start using their earned sick time. 3. Harass the sickened worker out of the company. 4. Hire an unsuspecting healthy worker to replace them.

β
After almost a decade in high altitude astronomy, I went on to develop Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity.
β

β
To build the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) atop Mauna Kea requires a willful ignorance to Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) by the many people involved with the project.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
There really needs to be a thorough review of current long term summit staff and past summit employees to characterize the long term health effects and fatalities that Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) causes.

β
The most unhygienic thing that I observed during my time in very high altitude astronomy was dozens of workers all sharing the same oxygen administration mask for treating their daily oxygen starvation sicknesses.

Observed health conditions in various high altitude workers were not limited to: Digestive Disorders, Heart Issues, Chronic Headaches, Strokes, Fatigue, Sleepiness, Sleep Disorders, Amnestic Disorders, Irritability, Aggressive Behaviors, Confusion, Various Mental Health Issues, Radiation Sickness including Faraday Cage Sickness, Benign Tumors and Cancers that included Throat, Lymphoma and Colon cancer.

The following information really should be placed on all very high altitude job adverts and company contracts: WARNING β Very high altitude commuting presents many known health risks to sea level adapted humans. Some of the documented conditions are headaches, forgetfulness, confusion, irritability, aggression, hallucinations, visions, light headedness, fatigue, fainting, sore throats, runny noses, digestive disturbances, changed personality and panic attacks. Development of cancer, anemia, high cholesterol, heart, lung, brain, and blood oxygenation issues have occurred in very high altitude workers that have resulted in disability and premature death. The nearest fully equipped hospital accident and emergency facility is typically one to two hours away. Numerous very high altitude workers have been killed due to fatal mistakes on the job. Workers are expected to use a variety of company supplied drugs to offset the daily very high altitude sickness including "RX-Only" prescription medical oxygen. Daily long term self medication is known to damage human health. The work environment is comparable to a Faraday cage and Faraday Cage Sickness (FCS) may occur in long term workers. Radiation levels are abnormally high and long term radiation sickness may result. Blood oxygen levels are typically in the region of 80% and the medical profession regards this as a health risk. Extreme night shifts are associated with causing poor health and lifelong sleep disorders. Low oxygen environments are associated with the onset of irritability, fatigue and Sleep Apnea. Repeatedly reporting observations of abnormal behaviors in workers to upper management may result in your contract not being renewed or termination without notice. Permanently sickened workers are unlikely to qualify for corporate government disability payments, which may lead to a lifetime of extreme poverty.

Five years of working at the toxic W. M. Keck Observatory was the point where I ceased to be healthy and started a daily struggle with sickness. That sickness has plagued me ever since.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
The W. M. Keck Foundation would be wise to establish how profound the health, safety, worker sickness and harassment issues are at the toxic W. M. Keck Observatory.

It was my experience that the medical profession could not correctly diagnose me. It fell onto me to discover the low level radiation sickness (LLRS), low blood oxygen levels during sleep, B12 deficiency, food intolerance, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) deficiency, bruxism and mercury poisoning.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
The medical profession seem incompetent at diagnosing Low Level Radiation Sickness (LLRS).
β
β
Steven Magee
β
If the astronomy management team becomes aware that you have developed long term high altitude sickness, then it is reasonable to think that you may be terminated soon.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
As a manager in high altitude astronomy, if you report to the upper management team that their staff appear sick and that they are displaying behavioral problems, it was my experience that they respond by notifying you that your contract will not be renewed and that you will be terminated without notice if anyone complains about you! High altitude astronomy is a very shady industry that only functions by ignoring worker health and safety issues.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
High altitude astronomy is a catch 22: Stay inside the observatory and get high altitude observatory disease (HAOD) or go outside and get radiation sickness. Either way, the sea level adapted human may develop illness and disease.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
The biggest mistake that I made in high altitude astronomy was not realizing the onset of sickness that I saw at the first astronomical observatory were the initial signs of High Altitude Observatory Disease (HAOD).
β
β
Steven Magee
β
Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) needs to be thoroughly researched and characterized by the medical profession before any more very high altitude workplaces are built on the summit. It is likely that once Mauna Kea Sickness is well characterized, all of the manned summit facilities would need to be removed on the grounds of health and safety.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) has cost me close to one million dollars in lost earnings. Long term that figure is expected to rise to four million dollars by age sixty five.
β

β
There is a need to set up a compensation fund for Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) for damaged employees, their families and their survivors.
β

β
Employees that have developed long term Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) typically have a myriad of health issues for the rest of their lives.
β

β
I observed many employees displaying Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) on the very high altitude summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii.

β
Not content with harassing me numerous times in a private office, an aggressive female manager started extending my extreme night shifts which would would make me really sick with shift work disorder, very high altitude sickness and workplace drug use.

β
The biggest discoveries of the Mauna Kea Observatories (MKO) are not going to come from astronomy, they are going to come from understanding Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) in the sea level adapted workers.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) left me appearing alive on the outside and feeling dead on the inside.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
The biggest threat to the future of very high altitude manned astronomy is a full understanding of what Mauna Kea Sickness (MKS) really is.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
I guess when it come to corporate government science interests, the inconvenience of worker sickness will be covered up.

When I worked at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, the management team were always saying that everyone was part of the ohana (family). When I got sick and needed essential surgery, they outcast me from the ohana. I concluded that the company ohana was a sham.
β
β
Steven Magee
β
Given that I have traced the primary cause of my disabling sickness to the toxic environment of high altitude astronomical research facilities, I am now expecting those that willfully damaged my health to go to jail.

The next morning, two others returned to the two stricken climbersβ position. After chipping blocks of ice off their faces, they reported them to be breathing, but severely frostbitten and βas close to death as a human being can beβ.
The call once again was made to leave them for dead. The climbers trudged back to camp and reported the deaths.
But then something incredible happened. Beck Weathers opened his eyes.
Beck says he saw his wife and kids standing in front of him, calling out to him.
This was the ember.
He slowly dragged himself to his feet and started stumbling forward.
He was completely blind in one eye, which was frozen shut by the cold, and had a visibility range of barely two feet in the other eye. His entire body was like ice, and he was crippled by altitude sickness. Yet he kept stumbling on.
Finally, against all odds, Beck Weathers lurched into camp.
Beck lost both his hands and his nose to frostbite, yet that tiny ember that burnt within him, that ember of hope from his family, was all he needed to get up and to move.
That ember saved his life.
Never underestimate the human spirit.

I had taken an obsolete astronomical spectral gas tube home from the observatory for use as an ornament. Many years later I broke the specialized gas tube in the home. In the days afterwards I started experiencing sickness that I had been reporting to my doctor during working at the high altitude observatory. My notes state: During the last few days my bones are starting to ache again and nerves are twitching in my body and face like they were when I worked at the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO)...headaches...insomnia...zoning out...tired...forgetful...confusion. 5 days earlier I had been atop Kitt Peak mountain and 4 days later the sheriff disconnected my electricity.

I had never been fired out of a job until I worked at the very high altitude summit of Mauna Kea. Afterwards, I was either fired or harassed out of every job until I became so sick that I filed for disability. I later discovered that Mauna Kea is biologically toxic to the sea level adapted human.

The dirty secrets of high altitude astronomy are unnaturally high solar radiation levels, Faraday cage sickness, man-made electromagnetic exposures, breathing industrial gas, oxygen starvation, organ damage, gastrointestinal problems, malnutrition, altered hormones, Gender Dysphoria (GD), shift work disorder, mental illness and occupational diseases.

It seems to me that astronomers are rushing to construct the biologically toxic Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) atop Mauna Kea before High Altitude Observatory Disease (HAOD) is fully characterized in the sickly workers.

I have kept an open mind to the reason why many doctors did not correctly diagnose me with mercury poisoning, industrial gas injuries, radiation sickness and high altitude disease is because they had been instructed to not diagnose occupational diseases.

The Hawaiians are smart to fill up the sacred mountain of Mauna Kea with law enforcement officers that are developing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) that may eventually lead to High Altitude Diseases (HAD) many years later.

Altitude sickness is known to develop in some people just above 4,900 feet and police officers should be screened to see how low it is occurring in them. A sea level adapted police officer with altitude sickness should be removed from duty and returned to sea level for recovery, regardless of how low it is occurring. Police officers that are repeatedly experiencing altitude sickness should be reassigned to sea level duty.

Mal-acclimatization occurs when the human has no long term adaptation to any altitude due to frequent changes in altitude over 4,900 feet. Mal-acclimatization may lead to long term sickness, gender issues, genetic changes, disease and premature death in the human.
